I Can't Believe I Did This!

My family and I were on our way home from our 4-day spring break in the Wisconsin Dells (not exactly a 'break' for parents)  when I decided to call my mom to see how she was feeling after her second chemo treatment.

Her first chemo treatment resulted in a 5-day hospital stay due to a fever.  Infections are very serious during this time because she had neutropenia, which is a low white blood cell count.  or, she GOT the fever because of her low white blood cell count.  I'm still trying to figure this cancer stuff out!

When my  mom answered the phone, my  heart sank into my gut.  She sounded terrible.  "Are you okay?"  "Not really", she moaned.  her temperature was high enough where she was bordering on another trip to the hospital.  My sister was supposed to be there with her but got stranded by a snowstorm and postponed her trip when her dog got sick.

My mom has always been very strong - the type of woman who keeps her aches and pains to herself.  She is always taking care of other people first and has a difficult time accepting help.  Her voice was telling me she needed someone to be with her.

It was a Tuesday.  I had the rest of the week off.  Bert was always good at reading my mind....he told me to go be with her.  We got home from the Dells at 2:30, I had my flight booked at 3p, and I was on the plane at 5p.

On the way to the airport, I called my  mom to tell her I would be there before she went to bed.  She started sobbing, "Oh, Kathy"  (She reminded me of Laura Petrie from the Dick Van Dyke Show....."Oh, Rob!!!!")  I sensed the tears came from pure relief.  While my step-dad is here with her, he is frequently gone throughout the day, which leaves her alone.  Not to mention, he doesn't know how to cook!

As I sat on the plane, in disbelief I was on my way to Arizona, I realized how my mom is truly my best friend and hero.  She has helped me through SO much and made me the person I am.  I can't think of a better way to spend my vacation.
