An A-Ha Moment

As the shock of my mom's diagnosis of non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma is tapering, it hasn't kept me from searching the internet, reading every article, and browsing every cookbook for any tips to help her build her immune system while she's going through chemo.  'Knowledge is power', right?

A 'junk' email I received today (World Cancer Day) felt like someone had thrown an ice-cold glass of water in my face.  It was a lengthy email but the message that made me have an 'A-Ha' moment was this......  Studies show that support and encouragement from family is critical for those dealing with cancer.

You may be thinking that IS what I'm doing for my mom - supporting her and helping her through this very difficult time. It occurred to me that is NOT what I'm doing!  What I am doing when I send her all those articles, recipes, links, etc. is REMINDING her she has cancer.  I need to send her all those dopey emails with the subject line 'This REALLY made me laugh'.

Maybe I should help by taking her mind OFF of her illness and just help her laugh.  I by no means will ignore her cancer but perhaps I will take her lead and talk about it when SHE wants to talk about it. Gotta go.... I need to search my 'deleted' box for all the jokes that have been forwarded that I never paid attention to!
